Welcome to Under The Gallus Frame, an Antique Mall and Mercantile store located in beautiful Butte, Montana. We are Jesse and Sarah Rowe, a husband and wife team who share a passion for antiques and history. We have a young daughter Aria, and two dogs named Rocky and Trotter who will also be around the store. We are excited to share our story with you and invite you to explore our collection of treasures.
How It All Started
We started our antique journey when Jesse helped his mom “Sassy” open her antique store, Sassy’s Consignment & Sales, in 2010. Over the years Sassy has been collecting and selling antiques, and she has taught us everything she knows about the business. She also inspired us to appreciate the stories and memories behind every item.
Now that Sassy has taken a step back, we have taken over with our own store, Under The Gallus Frame opened in July of 2023. Along the way, we have increased our knowledge and decided we would love to be a part of the preservation of the history of our beautiful Butte, Montana. Our store helps preserve both personal and local historical artifacts and makes sure they find homes where they can be appreciated.
The Gallus Frame Meaning
Our name, Under The Gallus Frame, is meant to reflect our love of Butte history and a nod to the city we adore. Butte is known for its rich mining heritage and its iconic headframes that dot the skyline. These structures are the legacy of the underground copper mining industry that made Butte the “The Richest Hill on Earth” and a prosperous city. They are also the symbols of the courage and sacrifice of the miners who worked under them.
The headframes were used to lower miners to their stations below the surface, where they faced many dangers and hardships. Also known as gallows frames, the local dialect eventually changed this to gallus frame. The miners were well aware of the double meaning of the name. They understood the risks in their daily work. Many of them lost their lives in the perilous task of “getting the rock in the box.”
Under The Gallus Frame is also a reference to a book by the same name, written by Darlene Matule.
We hope you enjoy browsing our store and finding something that speaks to you. Whether you are looking for a rare antique, a vintage collectible, or a unique gift, we have something for everyone. Come and visit us today and see what we have under the gallus frame!
